Local Lesbians Evolve Beyond the Potluck: Club 2Lips Opens

Donna C. Suerte and Nelly Marrero of Pinay Rican Productions will throw open the doors to Monterey's only lesbian dance club September 29th. "Women have been aching for something like this," said Suerte. "It lets them go to a local place rather than travel. The closest lesbian club is the Savoy in San Jose, over 85 miles away. "The Savoy is so different," said Suerte, "We are more...soulful."

The club will be the first in years to offer go go dancers and strippers. Each will perform on alternating nights, and sometimes together. While both of the gay clubs in Monterey welcome both lesbian and gay men, lesbians often find themselves outnumbered by as much as 4 to 1.

Commenting on the lack of a club specifically for lesbians, DJ A.D. said, "Women will be excited to have something, especially since they've been used to this big nothing. It's a chance for everyone to get together." DJ A.D. is known from her work at the Dakota nightclub in Santa Cruz on Wednesday nights.

The women chose the After Dark over other nightclubs in the area because it is well-known throughout the gay community. The last local club in Monterey to have a lesbian night was Eddie's on Fremont. That ended when the owner began to advertise to a predominantly heterosexual clientele

Club 2Lips will be held every second and fourth Tuesday at the After Dark nightclub in Monterey, 214 Lighthouse Ave. Call 877/981-0505 (pinayrican_2lips@yahoo.com).
