Local Lesbians to Bike Across the U.S.

A group of local lesbians will bicycle across the country in a tour that will be part fundraiser, part adventure story. The four member group called GirlQuest will start out on their three to four month trek from Seattle on July 1 and end it in Boston at the end of October.

"GirlQuest hopes to function as a link," said GirlQuest member Livia Lee, "between various women's lands, queer students groups, individual queer and women artists, and female athletes across the nation."

The idea for the ride came from Angela Dawn's "Lesbians Across the Country," a photo documentary on lesbian artists.

The four women-Laura Gree, Linda Porterfeld, Livia Lee, and Anuska P. Hill-who range in from 21 to 25, are looking for other lesbian women to join them. The trip may offer its share of potential hardships. There is no guarantee of a safe place to sleep or food to eat despite their planning efforts.

The group will capture their experiences on videotape for broadcast on QTV in Santa Cruz. The group may also send in field reports to The Paper and The Manifesto.

To support GirlQuest, send a check made out to the Santa Cruz Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center (P.O. Box 8280, Santa Cruz, CA, 95061, 408/425-5422) and write "GirlQuest" in the memo line. Donations are tax-deductible.

The group is also interested in any travel hints the community may have to offer.
