What was The Paper?

The Paper was conceived of by the Monterey County AIDS Project (MCAP) as an HIV prevention project. The first six issues were published under a California grant. After the grant money ran out, Wes Kashiwagi "adopted" the The Paper and ran it for three more years, one of which is available via the links above.

Was The Paper successful? Yes. It certainly gave the gay community in Monterey and Salinas more visibility and served as a community bulletin board. It offered gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses a place to advertise, and promoted the formation and growth of local social groups.

Was The Paper a financial success? No, as my Visa bills will attest. However, the creation of the website for The Paper in 1995 was partly responsible for my current career in Web marketing. It's strange how things work out.
